Where do you want to go ?
Just eight square kilometres in size, with a highest point of only 83 metres, Rimatara is the smallest inhabited island in the Austral Islands.
The ‘ura, or Kuhl’s lorikeet, a scarlet parrot native to the island and now rare across the Pacific, survived here thanks to a royal tapu, or traditional prohibition, dating back to the 19th century. It remains one of Rimatara’s most powerful symbols.
Approx. 1h45 flight from Tahiti.
Visitors may be welcomed with a traditional smoke-cleansing ritual, while pandanus weaving from the island is renowned well beyond its shores.
Birdwatching, traditional crafts, cultural immersion, and a truly off-the-beaten-path escape.
