Rimatara

The Serene

Où veux-tu aller ?

8,6 km² • 893 residents • 83 m (Mount Uahu)

Just eight square kilometres in size, with a highest point of only 83 metres, Rimatara is the smallest inhabited island in the Austral Islands.

The ‘ura, or Kuhl’s lorikeet, a scarlet parrot native to the island and now rare across the Pacific, survived here thanks to a royal tapu, or traditional prohibition, dating back to the 19th century. It remains one of Rimatara’s most powerful symbols.
