32 km² • 2 163 residents • 385 m (Mount Manureva)

Rurutu is a former volcanic island whose ancient atoll was uplifted by tectonic activity, creating limestone cliffs pierced with caves and filled with stalactites, some of which can be explored with a guide. From July to November, humpback whales visit the island to give birth, and can often be observed from the shore. The rest of the year, the island keeps its traditional pandanus weaving craftsmanship alive.
