Its name means “nine eyes”: one pass and eight shallow channels cut through its reef. Inside, the lagoon is anything but ordinary. It is divided into a mosaic of around seventy pools separated by coral formations, a remarkable geological feature in French Polynesia. Nearly three hundred inhabitants live in Pahua, while significant phosphate deposits lie beneath the atoll. Marae Papiro preserves the stone seat associated with the legendary King Tu Paure.
